AutoFit column width shortcut in Excel for Mac

Short answer: Excel for Mac has no built-in keyboard shortcut for AutoFit. Double-click the column border, or use Format ▸ Column ▸ AutoFit Selection. With RibbonBridge, tap ⌥ and type HOI, exactly like AltHOI on Windows.

Ways to autofit on a Mac

1. Double-click the border (mouse)

Point at the line between two column letters (for example between A and B) and double-click: column A fits its widest entry. Select several columns first to fit them all at once. For rows, double-click the line between two row numbers.

2. The Format menu

Select the column, then choose Format ▸ Column ▸ AutoFit Selection. For rows: Format ▸ Row ▸ AutoFit. Reliable, but three clicks deep.

3. Option H O I with RibbonBridge

Excel for Mac's KeyTips get you to the Format menu (⌥HO), but its items have no letters, so the I does nothing. RibbonBridge adds the Windows letters, so the whole sequence works from the keyboard:

On MacWhat it doesWindows
⌥HOIAutoFit column widthAlt H O I
⌥HOAAutoFit row heightAlt H O A
⌥HOWSet column width…Alt H O W
⌥HOHSet row height…Alt H O H
⌥OCAAutoFit column (classic Excel 2003 sequence)Alt O C A
⌥ORAAutoFit row (classic Excel 2003 sequence)Alt O R A

Tip: select the whole sheet first (⌘A), then ⌥HOI fits every column at once.

Setup

  1. Switch on Excel's KeyTips: Excel ▸ Settings ▸ Accessibility ▸ KeyTips ▸ ⌥.
  2. Install RibbonBridge. Its welcome window can do step 1 for you.
  3. Tap Option (press and release) and type the letters one after another.
